Did you know that Kenya banned plastic bags?
Kenya made an inspiring movement towards a more eco-friendly environment by making plastic bags illegal, with a ban imposed in 2017. It was incredible to see everyone embrace these rules so quickly and with so much enthusiasm.
This gave us the inspiration to make it a priority to reduce our use of plastic packaging as best as possible. However, it's not easy to do, it's not cheap, and it's not always efficient, but... it's the right thing to do, and as we all know, the right thing to do is usually the hardest thing to do!
So, we set off on this mission, but we soon hit some road blocks... Whilst trying to source eco-friendly packaging bags for our shirts, we fast realised that it's not as simple as we thought and that plastic actually encompasses a lot of benefits we took for granted. For example, plastic is see-through and therefore allows customers to see the shirts clearly in their packaging before purchasing them, and also allows us to easily see the size labels of a shirts before taking the shirt out of the packaging to give to customers to try on. Plastic also speeds up our online packaging and shipping process, which in turn saved time and therefore cost. Plastic is also waterproof and comes with the benefit of having sticky flaps that ceil effectively. Plastic also happens to be very efficient with sticky labels, making it easy to stick logo and barcode labels to the products, which comes with a whole load of added and cost saving benefits. Clear plastic is also light, takes up very little space and looks smart, which is very key to saving more costs whilst giving the product a premium look at the same time. But plastics' biggest downfall is that it's BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!
After searching hard for the best alternatives to plastic, we finally found an eco-friendly, non-plastic, recyclable, semi-see-through, splash proof, reusable fabric option. This fabric feels very soft and looks smart. We then added handles and close-able button clips to make them very useful bags to reuse. For example, they are great shoe bag options for traveling.
It took us a while, but we can now proudly say that all of our shirts made from 2020 onwards come in plastic free, eco-friendly, reusable bags! ;)
